In order to rebuild the schools as early as possible, Kamaishi city accepted an architect’s proposal which was designed to cut down the amount of excavation from the mountain to a minimum. The design of the junior high school crosses over the mountain stream like a bridge, reducing the amount of excavation by one third of what was first estimated and this also reduced the construction period by one and half years. The collaboration of architecture and civil engineering working together made this possible. The school gym was built on higher ground and has a side of it, made of glass, resulting in the gym shining light on the town at night like a lighthouse. The school plays a role as a disaster prevention facility and is designed to serve as an evacuation center for emergency situations. Huge staircases are connected to the school allowing citizens the ability, during an emergency, to move to higher ground quickly and safely.
