Kamaishi Earthquake Recovery & Architecture Tour
– The spirit of people living and working in conjunction with the ocean and the lessons learned due to the tsunami disaster

Kamaishi city, Japan, has been in a state of recovery since the Great Eastern Earthquake of 2011. Many new buildings feature a design which reflects local identity and an essence of disaster prevention. We, Kamaishi DMC LTD, have made a special tour available for you. You will see the new architectural and urban designs, beautiful nature, history and culture of local’s daily life and the lessons learned due to the tsunami disaster.

Kamaishi city is located at the center of Sanriku Rias Coast area. In 2011, the tsunami hit the city, devastating the 14 central areas and fishery villages. The local government immediately launched a project team for city recovery, appointing professional architects, Mr.Toyoh Ito, Mr. Yasuaki Onoda, and Mr.Arata Endo as the project directors.

Their ultimate goal was not to restore the city as it had been before; but to create a new sustainable town for future generations. This vision is at the forefront of their discussions. Happily, these architects’ vision has culminated in a beautifully admired town that is relished by all that are fortunate enough to see the buildings through the competition of “Kamaishi Mirai No Machi (Kamaishi Future Town) project.”
